HPPDS Highlights 1/20/17

A note from the music teacher Helping Children Deal with Their Feelings Children need to have their feelings accepted and respected. All feelings can be accepted. Certain actions must be limited.        You can listen quietly and attentively, instead of half listening. (Silence, really, offer a “listening face”, and let them do the talking.)        You can acknowledge their feelings with just a word, instead of... Read More

Positive Parenting Strategies

I enjoyed seeing a few of you at the Speaker event with Kristin Bemis, LPC, at St. John’s last Tuesday, and I hope you were able to find answers to some of your parenting questions! I went home that night feeling pretty good about my success at limiting tears and frustration through dinner, teeth brushing and bedtime – an often arduous task. Love and Learning

A few weeks ago I attended the Changing the Odds conference hosted by the Momentous Institute, a non-profit devoted to building social emotional health in children. I am so in love with their work, because I truly believe (and research proves) that social emotional health is the most important piece of the "success" puzzle. We can recognize as adults that it is difficult to learn and focus when we are stressed, and this applies to children as well. The basic brain science behind this is that... Read More

Does Bad Outweigh Good?

I am so eager and excited to attend the Changing the Odds conference tomorrow and Friday – hands down the best conference I attend each year. Last year, we heard from so many wonderful experts in brain science, and I was really struck by the topic of the impact of negative vs. positive experiences on the brain. Negative experiences greatly outweigh positive when it comes to mental processing, and therefore, the impact they have on the brain. I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and feel that... Read More

The EdVenture Lab

EdVenture lab at HPPDS began last week for PreK4 and Kindergarten. Mrs. Mobley, our teacher, will spend the year introducing children to science in an original, entertaining and hands-on fashion. We are calling this subject “STEAM” for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Our first lesson introduced the children to the way that scientists use observation to gain information about the world so that we can ask good “Why” questions. Next, PreK4 will begin learning about mass and density... Read More

Furthering our Mission: HPPDS Shepherds

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 1 Peter 5:2-3 It’s not often we equate early childhood with leadership, but the truth is, the oldest students at HPPDS are very capable of serving as leaders and the benefits are many! As part of our mission of... Read More
